gua sha is a movie about the differences between american and chinese culture. xu datong is a video games designer in st. louis. when his father visits from china, he performs gua sha(a chinese traditional treatment)on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. in the court, datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son. i think this scene is shocking and thought-provoking to most of the chinese audiences. but the most impressing scene to me is the ending. datong wants to see his son in christmas eve, he has to climb a pipe to the ninth floor which his son lives. i think the pipe is not only a pipe, but also a gap, a deep gap between american and 5000-year chinese culture. he wants to climb over the gap and he will never succeed, perhaps no chinese people really could succeed.
it’s about assimilation into american culture, and not assimilation in an ”international” city, like sf or ny or la or chicago, but st. louis, mo(actually shot there).really great acting, interesting story.
gua sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient’s acupuncture acupressure massage points. it works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. this method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, when the visiting grandpa who does not speak any english used this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both son and daughter-in-law were at work.
sadly, in us, this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are due to simple misunderstanding between cultures.gua sha: step-by-step, by arya nielsen.if an acupuncturist is trained in classical chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness.
today was a sunny day. i got up early in the morning and went to drum practice. because of good behavior, my mother said to take me to the movies in the afternoon.
the movie we watched was called paddington 2. it was about a little bear. his name is paddington bear, and after the adventures of the first episode, the brave and kind-hearted paddington becomes part of the brown family and settles down in london. he was also thinking of his aunt lucy in peru, who had taught him from a young age that if you were kind to others, they would be kind to you. bearing his aunt's words in mind, paddington is friendly and helpful to others, and is well liked by his neighbours.
paddington accidentally obtains a pop-up book containing a treasure map in order to give his aunt lucy a beautiful gift on her 100th birthday. then, in a series of events, paddington was taken to prison as a thief. finally, with the help of the brown family and friends, the bad guy is finally caught and paddington is free.
the whole film is humorous, the language is vivid, i watched with relish. at the same time, the movie also tells us to help others more and extend the hand of friendship to others. then when we are in trouble, others will help us. so we should all learn from paddington bear, be a brave and kind person, so that the world will become a better place.
the moral issues proposed by artificial intelligence
in the movie,a diversity of robots were created to meet humans need. andwhen the first robot with emotion like humans is going to be produced, someoneraised a question: what responsibility should human take for robots who arecreated to love human? in fact, its really a great challenge in traditionalmorality.
what happens if we begin to create a robot that is capable to love likesus? it means that we would be more struggling to regard robot as an animatelives or just a tool to feet our needs, especially an intelligent object justcries and laughs exactly like us. the two choices represent two divergentattitudes towards robot. emotionally, its natural for people to regard robotswho are so similar to us as our friends or families, even closer than pets. theyboth have feelings and emotion. for intelligent robots with emotion, they work, talk, and even love as we do. however, rationally, robots are just artificialmachines designed by human, and made to serve us,which give human a greatappetency to control and rule them, using as slaves or even tools. apparently, its difficult to tell which attitude is right definitely for now. for the reasonthat, when there is a novel controversial object shaping in the process oftechnology, traditional morality tends to wake and needs to develop.
“hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” when andy dufresne puts it in such a quiet way, my heart ache because of it. have you ever felt that way about hope? hope is the only thing in the wild world not carved out of gray stone. hope is a small place inside of us anyone can never lock away. that is what i’ve learnt from an excellent movie the shawshank redemption.
the story begins in 1947, when andy dufresne, a city banker, is wrongfully convicted of his wife and her lover. he is sent to shawshank prison and receives a double life sentence for the crime. in shawshank, andy forms an extraordinary friendship with red, a man who knows how to get things from the outside. andy gets a 5 inches long rockhammer and a huge poster from red, by which he secretly puts his pipedream into practice. after 20 years digging, andy tunnels through the prison wall. then he crawls 500 yards through the sewer and gets out into a ditch near the field beyond the ground of shawshank, with no equipment, no one knows.
on the first viewing, it’s the story of andy and his struggle to maintain hope despite his circumstances. however, this is really a movie about red and his struggle to find meaning and purpose. it seems that we are more or less similar with red, because we’ve got used to the gray walls around us, which stand for routine, and then more routine. if one day, these walls dessolve away, we’ll be afraid instead of free. we’re afraid of not being ruled? that sounds ridiculous, but we actually are! fortunately, when red is faced with the same situation as we are, because of andy, he can find a different path—the path of freedom that is lit by hope.
sometimes, we feel many things have let us down and don’t hope for the good anymore. but i have to say, suffering is not always a bad thing. suffering produces perseverance, character, and character, hope. if we can see hope through all the hardship, nothing’s gonna stop us marching towards victory!
hope is the chief happiness the world affords. hope encourages people to keep fighting for dreams, freedom and dignity. hope helps people to appreciate the beauty of life. “he once is born, that is die.” everyone is the same. the only difference is whether you get a busy living or a busy dying. remember we aren’t the birds that meant to be caged, when we spread our wings and fly away, we’ll appreciate the trembling of the heart, the singing of the mind, the flying of the soul and the hope to be free.
