天津春节的时段广义上是指从农历腊月初八腊八节开始，一直到二月初二龙抬头结束。天津民间有“没出正月就算过年”的说法。但狭义上讲，天津春节当天仅指大年三十和正月初一。
腊八节是在农历腊月初八。这一天，家家开始熬腊八粥，各种各样、大大小小的豆子、米、干果，给孩子们做还要放红糖、白糖。还有腊八蒜，把大蒜剥了皮，泡入醋内，再加白糖，拌匀。过年时，人人吃饺子。等吃饺子时打开，那蒜就呈翠绿色了，给白白胖胖的饺子又添了一种美味。
准备过年，大人们忙，孩子们也忙。福字、吊钱儿、灯笼、窗花都是要买的（也有的自己做）。孩子们更是在烟花摊前挑来挑去，不买一大兜不行。最后大人带着孩子们去买各种各样的糖、蜜饯、干果。吃的、穿的、玩的、用的都要买齐全了。
腊月二十三就是小年了，孩子们吃着糖瓜儿，等着天黑。吃饭后，大人带着孩子们去放焰火。屋内的人听到外面的烟花声一点儿也不会觉得烦。那些烟花把黑夜衬托得无比美丽。

今日，人们在腊月二十三吃的糖瓜儿，就是为了粘住灶王爷的嘴而制成的。
最忙的日子莫过于二十三之后了。家家户户都要大扫除一次，各种食材更要准备充足，因为大多数的店铺都在正月初一到初五关门，什么鸡、鸭、鱼、肉、米到了正月初一绝对难买。
